GEAC and FSSAI

🧬 1. GEAC – Genetic Engineering Appraisal Committee

🔹 What is GEAC?

It is India’s apex body for approving activities related to genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and their products.

🏛️ Constitutional Status:

  • Set up under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986

  • Operates under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC)

🧪 Key Functions:

⚠️ Relevance to GM Soyabean & Corn:
  • GEAC’s approval is mandatory for import, field trial, or commercial use of any GM crop.

  • It has not approved GM soyabean or corn for human consumption in India.

🥗 2. FSSAI – Food Safety and Standards Authority of India

🔹 What is FSSAI?

It is India’s statutory authority for setting food safety standards and regulating the manufacture, storage, distribution, and import of food items.

  • India’s current food safety regulations prohibit GM food imports without prior clearance.

🏛️ How GEAC & FSSAI Work Together:

GEACFSSAI
Scientific & environmental clearance of GMOsFood safety and nutritional clearance
MoEFCCMinistry of Health
First gatekeeper for GMOsFinal gatekeeper for food on shelves
Both must approve before any GM product enters Indian markets, including from the U.S.

🧭 Suryavanshi Perspective:

“GEAC guards the genes, FSSAI guards the grains.”
In the India–U.S. agri-trade dialogue, both act as bulwarks against unwanted biotech interference in Bharat’s food chain.
