The 30-Second Trick UPSC Toppers usually follow a very specific strategy to solve comprehension quickly

1. Read the question first, not the passage

Instead of reading the full passage immediately:

  1. Look at the question first.

  2. Identify what it is asking:

    • Main idea

    • Author’s opinion

    • Fact from the passage

This helps your brain search for the answer while reading.

2. Use the Keyword Scan Method

While reading the passage:

  • Look for keywords from the question

  • Ignore unnecessary sentences

Example keywords:

  • however

  • therefore

  • but

  • although

These words usually contain the main idea or conclusion.

3. Eliminate extreme options

In CSAT comprehension:

❌ Wrong answers often contain words like

  • Always

  • Never

  • Completely

  • Only

UPSC passages usually present balanced arguments, not extreme ones.

4. Identify the author’s tone

Most CSAT passages are:

  • balanced

  • analytical

  • cautious

Rarely emotional.

5. Never use outside knowledge

Answer only from the passage.
Even if you know the topic well, UPSC sometimes tests interpretation, not facts.
